Ruben Amorim Questions Bruno Fernandes’ Trust in Manchester United Teammates After Real Sociedad Victory

Bruno Fernandes delivered a match-winning performance in Manchester United’s 4-1 triumph over Real Sociedad on Thursday, netting a hat-trick to secure his side’s place in the UEFA Europa League quarterfinals. However, Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim, speaking to the media after the game, made a bold claim about the Portuguese midfielder’s approach, suggesting that Fernandes does not fully trust his teammates on the pitch.

Amorim’s Verdict on Bruno Fernandes

While analyzing Fernandes’ influence on the game, Amorim pointed out that the 29-year-old’s relentless desire to win sometimes forces him to take on too much responsibility, even shifting across multiple positions during matches. Speaking via Metro, he stated:

“It’s hard for a player like Bruno. He wants to win really badly, sometimes too much. It’s not a bad thing, but sometimes he goes around different positions, he doesn’t trust his teammates. He can show that frustration, but he’s always there.”

Amorim further highlighted the Manchester United captain’s versatility, noting how he plays across different roles depending on the team’s needs.

“He’s a guy who can play one game and then will be ready to play in a different position. He can take set-pieces, score penalties, press high, and play in transitions in the last 15 minutes of games. Sometimes I need someone in this team to take the ball to the last third. I use Bruno, pushed him a little bit back.”

The manager also compared Fernandes’ adaptability to Manchester United legend Ryan Giggs, emphasizing his ability to operate effectively in multiple roles.

“[Ryan] Giggs was a player who came inside, I’m trying to think about the team and not Bruno. Near the box, he’s so dangerous – he can assist and shoot. Sometimes we need him at No.8, No.10, and No.6.”

Bruno Fernandes’ Performance Against Real Sociedad

Fernandes once again proved his importance to Amorim’s squad with a stunning display in Spain. The Portuguese playmaker bagged a hat-trick, with two of his goals coming from the penalty spot. His clinical finishing and leadership on the pitch helped United overturn a tricky first-leg situation and cruise into the next round.

The 29-year-old’s stats against Real Sociedad showcased his all-round contribution:

•Goals: 3

•Assists: 0

•Chances Created: 4

•Pass Accuracy: 86%

•Touches: 73

•Dribbles Completed: 2/3

•Key Passes: 3

•Recoveries: 5

Beyond his attacking impact, Fernandes was heavily involved in Manchester United’s buildup play, dropping deep to collect the ball and dictate the tempo. His defensive work rate was also evident, with five recoveries and a couple of crucial interventions in midfield.

Does Bruno Fernandes’ Style Help or Hurt United?

Amorim’s comments raise an interesting debate regarding Fernandes’ role at Manchester United. While his work rate and versatility are undeniable assets, his tendency to roam and take matters into his own hands could be interpreted as a sign of a lack of faith in his teammates.

The Red Devils have struggled with consistency this season, and Fernandes has often been the player stepping up when the team needs a spark. His ability to operate in different roles has been crucial, but it also highlights United’s ongoing issues in midfield cohesion and attacking structure.

Manchester United’s Next Challenge

With the win over Real Sociedad, United secured a spot in the Europa League quarterfinals, where they will face French side Lyon. Fernandes will once again be a key figure, and his leadership will be essential as Erik ten Hag’s men look to push for silverware.

Amorim’s comments may divide opinion, but one thing remains clear—Bruno Fernandes is at the heart of Manchester United’s ambitions, whether he trusts his teammates or not.
